As early as 1828 there were a few white settlers here and still some Native Americans. Numerous wagon trains from Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Kentucky brought many of our early settlers. They were all looking for good farmland and plenty of water.
Johnson County was created from a portion of Pope County on November 16, 1833, and was named after the first Territorial Judge of Arkansas, Judge Benjamin Johnson.

In 1836, the county seat was established in Clarksville, which was so named in honor of Lorenzo N. Clarke, a large landowner in the area.
Clarksville was incorporated on December 21, 1848.

Clarksville is only 15 miles from thousands of acres of national forest land, and just a mile from the Arkansas River. Nature lovers and hunters come from all areas to observe deer, wild turkey, black bear, and an occasional elk.
The Arkansas River Valley is known for prime farms, cattle ranches, and mom & pop poultry operations. Area ranchers report accommodating a cow/calf pair per three acres of pasture.
Johnson County has a low (4.5%) unemployment rate. A few area employers include Tyson Poultry, Tyson Feed Mill, Wal-Mart Distribution Center, Sara Lee Hosiery, Greenville Tube, Nite-Lite Inc., Stapleton Ladder, and Baldor Electric.
5 public schools and 2 private schools provide education to local students. In addition, those seeking higher education can attend the University of the Ozarks, a four-year private liberal arts university steeped in a rich tradition of academic excellence. Arkansas Tech University, Westark College and the University of Arkansas are additional options located within an hour of town.
Johnson Regional Medical Center supplies medical care to the area. The facility combines the skills of physicians, specialists, therapists and nurses to assist in achieving the maximum level of recovery.
Piney Bay Recreation Area, Horse Head Lake and Spadra Lake are just a few of the area lakes offering swimming, boating and fishing activities.
Famous Branson, Missouri, is just a short and scenic two-hour drive from Clarksville. Bull Shoals Lake and the famous White River, known for its world-record brown trout, are also within a couple hours of town.
Every summer, Johnson County celebrates its reputation as the primary peach provider of Arkansas with the Johnson County Peach Festival in downtown Clarksville. The festival includes a parade, numerous peach-filled treats and even a peach pie-eating contest.
